Vintage 2018
Country New Zealand

It’s back to a classic vintage for the wine affectionately known as the First Growth of New Zealand... so say Fine Wine Delivery with a massive 98/100... and notably conservative and iconic Aussie critic Huon Hooke with a matching 98/100. 2018 displays great structure and concentration but the defining character of the vintage is its approachability. Often more restrained and tighter knit in its youth, this vintage is gushing with vibrancy and bright fruit, massively concentrated and precocious, but allied with structure and complexity to ensure it will live for a very long time. This year’s blend is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and has spent 17 months in new French oak.

Powerfully aromatic – classical Cabernet characters of crème de cassis, bay leaf, plum, berry, tobacco and graphite.

Dense and focused, youthful pristine berry and plum fruits flood the palate, closely followed by a burly entourage of structural tannins. Still very primary but undeniably luxurious and beautifully savoury on the finish its filled with abundant potential. Possibly more forward than other classic Coleraine vintages, but with all the bones, flesh and sinew to reward patient cellaring over 10 to 25 years. The wine will improve with a few hours in the decanter before enjoying, especially if opened before 2023.
