Description

Fine Wine Delivery Co has had a longer relationship with this wine than most, and without dropping names, it includes the Prime Minister of NZ, the Rt Hon John Key! Mr Key was generous enough to host a fundraising dinner for our Riding for Hospice event in early 2016. Sir George Fistonich, owner of Villa Maria, kindly donated 24 bottles of his Ngakirikiri, which was consumed with a mixture of shock and awe. We had some 10 bottles left over at the end of the night and the PM decided to auction them. Each one went for $1000, which one of our most generous customers, Roger Spooner, offered to match, bringing the total to $2,000/bottle. Our release price of $149 seems very reasonable by comparison!

The 2013 season was one for the ages, officially labelled a drought year by February with one cloudless Hawkes Bay day following another. Not a hot year, the cooler nights locked in the freshness of the grapes, allowing Nick Picone and his team to pick at leisure. Right from the time they fermented this wine, they knew they had something special on their hands, the wine spending 35-42 days on skins and 18 months in roughly 52% French Oak. One of the great wines ever made in NZ, this will be extremely long-lived and drinking well long after most of us are gone.

Smells

A faultless bouquet of purest Cabernet - vibrant cassis, violet and rose florals, with an array of berries kissed with leather and the cedary perfume of a humidor full of Cuban cigars.

Tastes

Silky and densely concentrated in the mouth, the tannins are so finely rendered they become one with the concentrated fruit. Complex suggestions of dried herbs, espresso and blackcurrant, the finish is interminably long, with dimensions of flavour unfurling on the back palate. A symphony in crimson, Ngakirikiri will only be released in the finest years. but all subsequent years will be forever compared to this stunning debut.
