Description

"Puriri Hill's top wine in an outstanding vintage. Dense yet elegant red with an intriguing mix of savoury and berry fruit flavours together with a suggestion of floral (violet?) and spice/anise. Beautifully structured to give obvious cellaring potential although the wine can still be appreciated now..." Bob Campbell MW

"The 2010 Pope is outstandingly lush and complex with ripe, supple tannins.shows great potential. Drink through 2027" Michael Cooper

Named after Ivan Pope, the 2010 vintage is a blend of 54% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 17% Carmenere and 4% Malbec. An abundant vintage that redefined quality in the region, Puriri Hills Pope saw 21 months in 75% new French Oak before bottling without fining or filtration. Bottled under only the finest cork, it's a wine that will show its best from 2020 onwards and live for who knows how long - 25-30 years conservatively if well cellared. This 2010 Pope has redefined what's possible for the NZ wine industry and will become a collector's item in years to come.

Smells

A bouquet of astonishing quality - a veritable spice bazaar of exotic perfumes including violets, cassis, dried plum, nutmeg, graphite, leather and a hint of dark chocolate and liquorice.

Tastes

Whopping concentration and great beauty simultaneously, delicate perfumes and dark cherries, succulent and creamy but with purity of fruit that is unlike anything you will have tasted from NZ before. An amazingly complete wine - hard to imagine how it could possibly be much better. Push the boat out and grab as much as you can afford.this one will make old bones and deliver transcendent pleasure along the way. Enjoy through 2040.
