Description

Arguably New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir, certainly if track records are taken into account, Ata Rangi have been doing Pinot Noir better and for longer than anyone. An incredibly consistent wine since the early 1980s, they've had a dream run even by their lofty standards with three of the finest vintages ever in succession. Bob Campbell MW rates the wine 99/100 for the second year in a row, and gushes just like we do about the wine's amazing structure and core of sweet fruit. The product of a long Indian summer, the seeds were ripe long before the sugar levels were ready, as Helen Masters says, the enduring dream of any winemaker. A truly profound vintage of the benchmark Pinot in New Zealand, 2015 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is an instant classic and a must for any serious wine collector.

Smells

Insanely complex herbal notes, thyme and freshly mown hay, with an array of fragrant red and black fruits.

Tastes

Immensely concentrated and still very densely packed at this early stage, one can get a glimpse into the future of this embryonic star. Deep, dark flavours of cherries, spices and dried herbs, particularly thyme, this is all there for the taking - the only factor not yet present is time. Give this wine a few years and then enjoy from 2020 until 2034 at least. A legend in the making
