Description

Takahiro Koyama learned his trade at Mountford Estate under the stewardship of legendary CP Lin (studying and completing viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University also helped)… Takahiro split his winemaking between New Zealand, California and Germany, until in 2017, with the help of some Japanese financial backers he purchased Mountford Estate (his alma mater). Bob Campbell is a big fan noting that he’s a “winemaker worth watching”! This Waipara Pinot comes from two vineyards, both from the ‘Glacial Gravel’ in the centre of the Waipara Valley. The grapes were hand harvested before natural fermentation and 18 months in French Oak barrels. Although lighter in colour, it still packs a punch!

Smells

Dark cherry, strawberries, beetroot and raspberry mingle with floral notes and spice.

Tastes

A potent burst of sweet red and dark berries are followed by cinnamon, liquorice and an earthy complexity. Tantalisingly silky tannins combine with a fine line of acid to create a most harmonious mouthfeel. Drinking perfectly at the moment, it would continue to evolve until at least 2025. Enjoy with a beetroot and goats cheese salad or steak tartare.
