Description

Prophet's Rock is a small Bendigo vineyard with a reputation hugely disproportionate to its size. Overlooking Lake Dunstan, its a landscape strewn with rocky schist and the tumble-down remains of old gold miners' cottages. Winemaker Paul Pujol nurtures his Pinot Noir vines, battling unforgiving conditions to make unforgettable wines.

Paul's Old World winemaking philosophy was shaped by three consecutive vintages in Sancerre, Alsace and the Languedoc. His turning point for Pinot Noir came via an invitation to work vintage in the hallowed cellars of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue in Burgundy, whose vineyards include the legendary Grand Crus of Bonnes-Mares and Musigny. It was a priceless experience and Paul has put those winemaking lessons to stunning effect with his recent releases. So much so that the winemaker from Comte Georges de Vogüe, Francois Millet, recently visited Paul in Central Otago to make a collaborative Pinot Noir called 'Prophets Rock Cuvée Aux Antipodes. It's the first wine Francois has ever made outside of Burgundy and it sits alongside Prophet's Rock's flagship Retrospect wine as the finest expressions of their vineyards.

This new release 2012 Prophet's Rock Retrospect represents the very finest Pinot they can make in a given year, benefitting from 17 months in French Oak plus a further 3 years in the bottle prior to release. Unfiltered to maintain all the integrity of the winemaking, it's a dramatic and luxurious Pinot Noir that shows the bold tannin structure of the vineyard supported by deeply concentrated and fragrant Pinot fruit. Cellar through 2025 with absolute confidence.
