Description

Always the darker, more savoury and herbal style of Pinot Noir, due to its east-facing aspect, the 2015 Earth Smoke shows the benefit of ever-increasing vine age, with even more depth and layers than previous releases. The soils are a heavier clay, and Mike and Claudia describe Earth Smoke as "more terrestrial, less astral". Bottled without fining or filtration, fermented with vineyard yeasts (pied de cuve) and named after the weed that grows in the vineyard (Fumaria officinalis = Earth Smoke), this is the very essence of the French concept of terroir, or the Maori concept of turangawaewae. At the Pinot 2017 conference, there was a big queue to taste this wine.

Smells

A haunting bouquet of wild florals, tobacco, smoky, gamey notes, sweet dried herbs like lavender, thyme and oregano, with a densely fruited core of cherries and yellow-fleshed plums.

Tastes

The signature of the site, a pronounced iron mineral note provides the steely backbone for all the soft, rounded fruit. A pronounced but very finely grained tannic structure is balanced by the freshening acidity, finishing extremely long, layered and very satisfying. The texture as always is the defining factor, the limpid colour and grainy, mouth-filling palate seems to tell the story of the organic and biodynamic inputs. From experience, these home wines improve significantly with cellaring, giving their best years from 5 to 6 years old and onwards.
