Description
Rudi Bauer makes a mean Pinot Noir, in fact he makes a lot of them, not just for his own Quartz Reef label, but for other local winegrowers as well. But the Single Ferment Pinot Noir under the black label is his finest expression, and in 2018 it's a fine yet powerful beauty. He nicknamed the single ferment “Sui Generis” (unique) and is part of his earnest commitment to biodynamics that has seen him become one of the only Demeter certified wineries in the country.
Smells
An array of dark cherry and berry fruits, tempered by wild thyme and whole bunch herbal notes and a hint of cola perhaps.
Tastes
A brooding and quite decadent palate with sweet fruit and lots of structure and dried herb complexity. Long and seriously satisfying in its youth, this will go well in the cellar. A seamless palate which fits the classic Burgundian description of an iron fist in a velvet glove. Initially it seems elegant, but it builds and builds. Enjoy now till 2030 with gamey meats or savoury pasta dishes.
