2013 Vinteloper Odeon Pinot Noir

Very few Australian Pinot Noirs pass our tasting panel - those that are good enough are often too expensive, failing to measure up to the best NZ has to offer at the price. But this one from Vinteloper well and truly stopped us in our tracks. Quality wise, it's the equal of nearly any wine made in NZ, its tiny production and costly production methods necessitating its justifiably high price tag. From a high altitude Single Vineyard in Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, the vines are 30 years old, the East/West row orientation markedly different from the norm. Crushed by hand and foot with lots of whole bunches and fermented with wild yeast, 50% new oak barrels yielded only 618 bottles total. If you want to see what great Australian Pinot Noir tastes like - look no further.

Very rich and brooding, with loads of black and red cherry, subtle herbal notes, dark chocolate and thyme.

Intensely concentrated and layered, with all sorts of plush character and classy undergrowth nuances set against a bed of fine, persistent tannins. The finish is seriously long, evidence of the very low cropping rate and old vines. Enjoyable now in its youth, better from 2018 onwards.
