Description

The first ever release of a super-premium Chardonnay from Hugh Crichton at Vidal, this is a label to sit above their fabled Legacy range. The wine is named after the year that Anthony Joseph Vidal emigrated to NZ from his native Spain. The 2014 vintage was probably the finest Chardonnay year the Hawke's Bay has ever seen, and several barrels from their Legacy 'Lyons' vineyard showed such immense character and concentration they were bottled separately for this new label. We always treat new labels like this with scepticism, since many prestige labels don't justify the price. However this Vidal 1888 bucks the trend, exceeding expectation and without doubt being one of the top 3 Chardonnays we've ever tried from New Zealand. With only 736 bottles made, Sir George Fistonich who owns Vidal has developed quite a taste for it, so you'd better get yours before it's all gone.

Smells

Haunting aromas of roasted hazelnut, toasty French oak, gunflint, fresh cream and an array of stonefruit and citrus notes. Intense, complex and extremely expressive.

Tastes

A rich, nutty and incredibly concentrated Chardonnay with sensational fresh acidity and energy pulsing through its veins. The purity is inspirational and the mealy, creamy finish replete with detail, nuance and sheer hedonism. Hard to imagine this wine being any better, you can see why Raymond Chan gave it a perfect score. We settled on 99, but you can safely say this wine will be 100 with another year or two in bottle. As good as it gets in New Zealand, this is one super-premium wine that truly merits its price. Enjoy with roast pork between now and 2024.
