Norrel Robertson MW has become famous for his wines crafted from ancient vines out of the Spanish region of Calatayud. Central to his reputation in NZ, has been Papa Luna, a full-bodied and exceptionally well-priced GSM wine that takes its name from Pedro Martinez de Luna the famous Aragonese cardinal and anti-pope... with a good portion of the fruit off 100+ year old vines. It’s deliciously Chateauneuf du Pape like in style and complexity, only hellishly cheaper!
Smells
Black currants, bright florals, black cherry, smoke, and raspberry.
Tastes
Rich, chocolatey, crammed with opulent sweet red and black fruits. The seductive sweetness is perfectly contrasted with subtle cured meat and crushed herb savoury complexities further enhancing its charm. Finely grained tannins and juicy acidity provide a composed platform to express its generous flavours perfectly. A big, spicy wine that will hum along until 2027+.
