Description

Arguably New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noir, certainly if history is closely looked at… it’s an argument we’d support. Ata Rangi have been doing NZ Pinot Noir at a consistently world class level for longer than anyone. An incredibly high achieving wine since the early 1980s, they’ve had a dream run even by their lofty standards with five of the finest vintages ever in succession. The 2020 vintage is already racking up huge international and domestic ratings. 98/100 Bob Campbell and 98/100 James Suckling, plus James 2022 NZ Wine of the Year! It’s brilliant value by global standards… a fraction of the price of like quality Premier & Grand Cru Burgundy. Under screwcap and in quality storage conditions… you could expect it to age gracefully through 15-20 years. Any Ata Rangi vintage should be part of NZ Pinot Noir aficionado’s collections… in the case of this 2020 it should be compulsory buying.

Smells

Insanely complex with fragrant red and black fruits, rosehip and cranberry notes with a herbal infusion, thyme, and a touch of cedar.

Tastes

Immensely concentrated and still very densely packed at this early stage, one can get a glimpse into the future of this embryonic star. Deep, dark flavours of cherries, spices, and dried herbs, yet this 2020 has vibrancy, poise, and sophistication, not often seen in younger Pinots. Often the structure can be closed early on and the tannins sometimes aggressive, but not this 2020, already glowing on release. Give this at least until 2026 to open, but ideally drink from 2028-2036 to enjoy it for the masterpiece it will become. A legend in the making.
