Description
Wowsers! The bouquet of this Syrah shows off the superb nature of the 2020 vintage, a symphony of very ripe black fruits, dark chocolate, cinnamon and black Doris plums. Weighty and rich on the palate, this is the finest Hawke's Bay Syrah pushed to its logical extreme, tasting more like a top McLaren Vale than a Gimblett Gravel Syrah. Everything is perfectly in balance though, the luxury firmly locked to a fresh acid lift and a mellow, sweet-fruited finish. Named after the Hawke's Bay icon winemaker Tom McDonald, this latest release is a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Smells
Deep dark liquorice, blackberry, cinnamon, dark chocolate, Christmas cake and plums.
Tastes
Incredibly rich and concentrated but still retaining its cool-climate purity, this is a masterstroke by Chris Scott, pushing the ripeness and power to the limit without compromising the wine's charm. Regarded by many winemakers as the finest Syrah vintage in Hawkes Bay history, 2020 TOM is a must for any serious collector's cellar. At its best from 2030 to 2035, this will live many years after for those who appreciate the beauty of older wines.
