98-98-97/100 extraordinary trio of... NZ Pinot Noir superstars

It's rare for one winery to feature so prominently in Bob Campbell's Top 12 - unless they are Felton Road.

Those who follow top NZ wineries will know that Bell Hill, arguably NZ's best and most sought after Pinot Noir, is made by one Marcel Giesen, founding winemaker at Giesen.

Marcel's commitment to making world class fine wines is well entrenched in Giesen company grape growing and winemaking these days. He has presided over the development of these limited production wines. Central to the program has also been the Giesen's lease and subsequent purchase of the Clayvin Vineyard, the Grand Cru-quality site made famous by Marlborough's top exponent of fine wine, Fromm.

Giesen now have full management of the Clayvin vineyard, crafting special Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its hallowed vines and the results are breath-taking! Their Clayvin Vineyard Pinot Noir received a huge 97/100 in Gourmet Traveller from Bob Campbell MW - aptly showcasing the special qualities of this legendary Marlborough vineyard!

It's our contention - looking at the knowledge, experience, quality culture, vineyard resources and financial support behind Giesen - that these are wines to be collected, cellared and eventually savoured. From the finest single vineyards they are limited and finite productions; they will oversubscribe in due course and only those buyers getting in now on the ground floor can be confident of access to future releases!

'Waihopai' Pinot Noir 2012

"Haunting Pinot Noir" - Bob Campbell MW

98/100 - Bob Campbell MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine

"19-year-old vines in Marlborough's Waihopai Valley with free draining river gravels over silt loam and a clay base. Fermented with 25% whole-bunches and matured in 300 litre French oak barrels (66% new). Scented, perfumed Pinot Noir with floral/violet/wild flower, red cherry, plum and a hint of spice and wood smoke. An intriguing and alluring wine that offers a complex array of flavours with the potential to deliver even more. Haunting Pinot Noir."

Bob Campbell MW's 'Pinot Noir of the Year' and 'Overall Wine of the Year' in Taste Magazine!

98/100 - Bob Campbell MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine

"From a high density (5500 vines per Ha) organic vineyard shoot-thinned to yield around one Kg of gapes per vine. Lovely dense, rich {Pinot Noir with impressive depth of dark-fleshed plum, black berry, liquorice and spice/anise. The wine has a sumptuous texture with a backbone of fine, ripe tannins preventing any suggestion of cloying. Serious Pinot Noir that's able to be appreciated now but will cellar very well indeed." Bob Campbell MW

From a very densely planted vineyard cropped at exceptionally low levels resulting in exceptionally concentrated fruit.
SMELLS: Allow a bit of time and plenty of swirling to open the deeply complex array of tamarillo, dark cherry, violet, star anise and exotic spice aromas.
TASTES: Impressively structured and built to last with a complex array of spice tinged fruits and savoury characters. Long, burgundy like tannin adds beautiful feel and presence through the palate with soft succulent acids perpetuating the deep core of flavours for a considerable time. Open a bottle now for a sneak peak at great things to come, then enjoy the rest between 2018/22 - Cheers.

Giesen Single Vineyard Selection Clayvin Pinot Noir 2012

Giesen Single Vineyard Selection
'Clayvin' Pinot Noir 2012

From NZ's first Grand Cru contender, Clayvin!

97/100 - Bob Campbell MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine

After many years of great wines under the Fromm label, to label wines Clayvin puts you under intense scrutiny from the nation's (and the world's) wine media. Fortunately the Giesen winemaking team are equal to the task, preserving the character of this famous vineyard in this 2012 vintage.
SMELLS: English rose, leather, red cherry and summer plum, with some herbal freshness from a small whole bunch component.
TASTES: Ripe berry flavours with cedary oak influence and a creamy. toasty texture. Gorgeous fine tannins but the structure to age well through to 2020+
