Mic and Molley Heynekamp sure know what they’re doing. Dating back to 1999 Eddyline Brewery in Nelson is the seventh brewery they’ve owned, including the original Eddyline in Colorado which now brews over 1.2 million litres a year. They first came to New Zealand in 2010 for Marchfest and saw how young the scene was here plus the enormous potential to replicate their business model. Not only that, but they fell in love with New Zealand and were drawn to the people and relaxed way of life. They eventually set up their life with their children and a brewery here in 2014, whilst continuing to run their Eddyline Brewery in Colorado.
Although the brewery still exists, it is now run by their friends and Mic and Molley focus on the NZ Eddyline, which started as a brew-pub and pizzeria four years ago in Nelson to now having a full scale production brewery. Their beers are recipes that they have created in the US but tweaked for us Kiwi’s – Mic says that he found that instead of the big, bitter West Coast style Double IPAs that sell so well in Colorado, they have toned down the recipes to suit a more session-able and balanced NZ style.
Their focus is on high quality but also value. Being one of the first in the US scene to release 6 packs of 440ml cans when many people said they would never sell. They are bringing this same value to the NZ market, with their 6 x 440ml cans hitting the shelves at an impressive $28 - $30 depending on the style. This includes an IPA and their famous Citra-loaded Hazy IPA, which works out at only $5 per 440ml can. From their core range, their Trail Carver APA is a great balanced and session-able option. They combine Idaho 7 hops with Amarillo, Simcoe and Mosaic giving citrus-hop characters and a smooth, crisp maltiness. Crank Yanker IPA is one of their most well-known recipes; a rich, bold and balanced West Coast American IPA with a shortbread malt character, balanced piney hops and an assertive bitterness. Lastly, Summer in the Citra Hazy IPA is double dry hopped and bursting with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops providing juicy and balanced marmalade citrus and pineapple flavours with a juicy mouthfeel.
We’re excited to have Eddyline on board, keep an eye out for the latest seasonal releases coming through from this talented and experienced team!
