Description
Bartoli Vecchio Samperi is not merely wine—it’s a philosophy. A defiant, soulful expression of place and tradition, made with no fortification, no compromise, and absolute reverence for time. Named the wine for the Samperi contrada, the zone in Marsala where the family estate lies, thus tying the wine directly to its terroir, a completely absent concept in modern-day Marsala. For the true aficionado, this is a wine of deep contemplation and visceral impact. Don’t wait til the end of the meal to serve Vecchio Samperi, but drink it with aged cheeses, braised meats or oven-baked turbot.
Smells
The bouquet is nothing short of transcendent—a sensory tapestry woven from decades of quiet aging. At first, there’s a hit of salted almonds, dried fig, and cooked quince, followed by complex oxidative notes: old oak barrels, burnt orange peel, tobacco leaf, and beeswax.
Tastes
On the palate, Vecchio Samperi is a revelation. It enters with concentrated warmth and an almost chewy salinity, yet there’s no sense of heaviness—just layer upon layer of umami, bitterness, and subtle sweetness. Flavors of roasted hazelnut, dried apricot, toffee, and oxidized apple glide over a taut frame of minerality and acidity that feels carved from stone. There's a depth that speaks of time, not fruit: a textural wine more akin to a fine Madeira or Palo Cortado, yet unmistakably its own creature.
