Description

Yalumba’s first foray into a truly super-premium style of wine, The Caley celebrates their 168 years of history and their affinity with Australia’s great red wine style, Cabernet Shiraz. Named after Fred Caley Smith, the grandson of Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, an intrepid young horticulturist who cut an almost Indiana Jones-like figure in the 1890s as he travelled the world, learning about winegrowing and sending back weekly letters to his family in Angaston, South Australia. The Caley is named in Fred’s honour, though this inaugural 2012 may live longer than the man himself, as he passed away at just 49 years old. Matured for 22 months in only French Oak barrels made at Yalumba’s in-house cooperage, the blend is 79% Cabernet (52% Coonawarra, 27% Barossa) and 21% Barossa Shiraz.

Smells

A haunting roll call of perfumes found in so many of the great Cabernet blends; crème de cassis, fresh mint, blackberry, leather, roses, mocha and liquorice.

Tastes

A thoroughbred in every sense of the word, it’s not a ‘melted liquorice’, heavy style, but thrives on purity of fruit, discreet power, insane complexity and a finish that makes you contemplate everything good in the world. Compelling, clean and seriously structured, The Caley, is a collector’s item that will drink well for 30 to 40 years at least
