Description

Located in the village of Escoussans, near Cadillac on the right bank of the Garonne River, Haut-Mouleyre makes a range of red and white wines of generally exceptional quality versus what you pay. We reviewed this commercially priced Oak Barrel Merlot Cabernet blend and unanimously agreed it was outrageous value, even more so when major US Retailers are selling it at $24.99US and our customers can buy it at just $23.99KIWI. The fruit simply leaps from the glass. Although commercially priced this is their higher tier, matured in oak barrels and where the oak adds another dimension to the lavish fruit, more serious on every level.

Smells

Complex perfumed aromas of blackcurrants, cranberries, bramble, graphite, red liquorice, brown spice with sandalwood and cedar.

Tastes

With airtime in the glass the harmony of fruit and oak is sublime. The palate has a vibrant and concentrated core of black fruits, with cassis, tobacco leaf and cedar flavours supported by dusty, toasty vanilla oak. The fine grain tannins complete the picture and build and build in the mouth, confirming the seriousness of this wine. Approachable now but also a wine to cellar 5-8 years+

Absolutely superb on the nose, with rich cassis and oak. Colour is a wonderful deep, dark red. The palate seemed a little short but still, a classic Bordeaux with the oak quite dominant, along with some black fruits. The finish seemed a little harsh but with plenty of air time it opened up brilliantly and the finish was a lot smoother. Lovely wine, still very young and great for the price. Buy, decant and enjoy.
