Description
Grenache is not a commonly grown grape in NZ, its native home being the Rhone Valley where it makes wines with exuberant fruit aromas and flavours of sun-drenched strawberries, boiled lollies, and wild raspberries. Usually a softer, fleshier style with moderately soft tannins and acid portraying the heat of its homeland. Thanks to Gordon Russell and his team at Esk they have produced a Kiwi version of this iconic Rhone variety. A slightly more robust style and with an earthy, spicy vein suggestive of the free-draining soils of central Hawkes Bay.
Smells
aromas of ripe red berry fruits, red and black liquorice, with hints of forest floor, underbrush and a herbal thread of crushed thyme.
Tastes
there is a juicy core of fleshy, fruit with lots of raspberry and strawberry flavours with undertones of mint, spearmint, and hints of black tea. Somewhat robust tannins frame the fleshy underbelly of this wine, giving way to milk chocolate and spicy flavours on the finish, and with moderately soft acid, true to the varietal form. An interesting version and certainly a wine with charm and charisma and a variety to watch in this region. Drinking well now through 2025.
