Description
Akarua was founded in the mid 1990's by Sir Clifford Skeggs where he secured one of the finest elevated North facing sites in Bannockburn. Recently it was sold to iconic French wine producer Edmond de Rothschild Heritage, but remains family run by the second generation of Skeggs. The first plantings were in 1996 and since 2014 Akarua now own enviable vineyards in Felton Road and Lowburn. Rua Pinot Noir has become a benchmark for Otago Pinot Noir lovers sub-$30 so it is no surprise it impresses the wine judges as well. With 5 Trophies and 12 Gold Medals across the last 6 vintages. Unsurprisingly it is now under strict allocations.
Smells
Classic Central Otago aromas with vibrant red cherry, lifted berry fruits with soft spicy tones and florals
Tastes
Aged for 7 months in 100% French Oak, but only 10% new so it brings a soft spice and warming charring undercurrent that doesn’t overpower the luscious dark cherry and red berry fruits. Fine tannins which build adding to the succulent, long finish, enjoy now through 2028.
We taste, rate & guarantee every wine we sell.
