Description
The 2021 Valli Bannockburn Pinot Noir is a testament that the sum is greater than its parts – not in the form of vineyards/fruit, but in the form of winemaking. The winemaking prowess at Valli consisting of Jen Parr and Grant Taylor resulted in this amazing 7 x 5 Star stunner. Jen brought a wealth of knowledge about the Bannockburn sub-region from her days at Terra Sancta meaning that the recent releases have been far more accessible and balanced in their youths than before she teamed up with Otago legend Grant Taylor. This Valli Bannockburn shows everything that’s great about arguably Central Otago’s most famous sub-region. Accordingly, although very complex, it is delicious in its youth but with potential to age up to 20-years in quality storage. Unmissable, at the pinnacle of Central Otago Pinot Noir.
Smells
Gorgeous spicy aromatics with a herbal current that is sublime on every level, intertwined with wild red berries, crushed thyme, spearmint notes, baking spice and Chinese 5 spice. The descriptives are endless.
Tastes
2021 has produced a wine of elegance, power and charm, with savoury, forest floor, sandalwood and toasty notes layered upon red fruits, cherry stone and notes of red and black liquorice. A silky, supple palate with fine grain tannins adding texture and structure. This is so incredibly enjoyable now but do save a few bottles to enjoy after 2030 and over the next decade when it will really start to sing.
