Description

Eligo is John’s flagship Shiraz crafted from exceptional parcels of fruit off his finest, low yielding old vine Barossa and Eden Valley vineyards. Judiciously fermented on skins then matured for 20 months in French oak - a mix of 300 litre Hogsheads (55% new) and 2-3-4-year-old barriques. John strives to produce a Shiraz with restrained power, rich texture, and palate length. Dense purple in colour the aromatics are haunting, and the palate is saturated with black/blue fruits laced with nutmeg and spicy, savoury oak, earthy savouriness, smoked meat, and liquorice. Almost as good as any Shiraz can be, it's built for the 20-year+ haul in the cellar, but eminently approachable in its youth.

Smells

Intense, alluring aromas of multiple black fruits, anise, spices, and savoury oak.

Tastes

The deep dark fruits of the Barossa are elegantly harnessed by the fine French oak. A succulent palate, evolving to a creamy medley of dark berries and plum infused with liquorice, baking spices, chocolate, and subtle savoury/earthy tastes. The tannins are smooth and mouth coating and fine, juicy acidity the perfect buoyancy to platform the luscious flavours to their determined finish. At is best 2027-2040 and likely to cellar longer in quality storage.
