Description

Since 2016, we’ve been banging on about the quality and style of Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay, it’s great to see them gaining such deserved high international recognition. Trinity Hill are one of the anchor producers of Hawkes Bay situated in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels. This is one of the great Chardonnays of NZ, one sip and you’ll get that. It’s also exceptional value for money… were it from White Burgundy it would have been several times the price. Its quality has exponentially improved over the last 15-years… but its price has only increased an equivalent 1% year on year! Vintage 2023 enjoyed an extended slow ripening period post the rains… enabling the fruit to ripen evenly and retain excellent natural acidity. Hand-harvested fruit was gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in predominantly 500-litre French oak puncheons, and a small number of 228-litre French oak barriques. 37% of the barrels were new. Malolactic fermentation was encouraged to soften the acidity and impart further richness. The wine spent 11 months in barrel before being blended to tank for a further four months maturation on its yeast lees to build additional texture and complexity. The wine was bottled in July 2022 with no fining and minimal filtration. Sounds like a rap sheet for expensive French White Burgundy. Enjoy now through 2030-2033.

Smells

Complex, elegant aromas… beguiling, poised, layers of citrus peel, grapefruit, toasty oak, warm, mealy biscuit notes, and subtle burnt match.

Tastes

Weight and finesse in union, streamlined, balanced with exceptional length and texture. Pink grapefruit is wrapped around white stonefruit, cashews, lightly roasted nuts, biscuity charm, and the finish is freshened with subtle lemon zest. Stunning drinking now through 2030 or even longer if properly stored. Serve with pasta dishes, richer seafoods or your favourite white meats.
