Description
Sitting just behind the Tower Bridge, the Union Jack and those naff Keep Calm and Carry On signs on the all-time list of Most British Things, Pimms is the very symbol of the elusive English summer. To the uninitiated it's basically a liqueur invented by a Kentish farmer's son turned London Oyster Bar owner who used to serve a gin-based drink with a secret mixture of herbs and spices in a No 1 Cup (hence the name). After a storied history that saw highs and lows it has come under the wing of Drinks Giant Diageo in 1997 and is undergoing a huge renaissance with high profile patronage by Wimbledon and the Henley Royal Regatta. Often blended with Champagne, it's also popular as a cocktail like Pimms Original with lemonade and mint, cucumber, orange and strawberry.
Smells
a delightful array of herbal notes, camomile, star anise and liquorice overlayered by bittersweet oranges, a dash of chocolate and an earthy complexity.
Tastes
refreshing flavours of juniper, citrus and cucumber giving way to an earthy, woody, bittersweet finish.
