Description
Church Road 1 Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a showcase of provenance, reflecting the unique character of Church Road's finest vineyards, including those in the prestigious Gimblett Gravels region. The wine is sourced from the Gimblett Road Vineyard, which sits in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. This area is known for its free-draining alluvial gravels, which create some of the most low-nutrient, low-vigour soils in Hawke’s Bay, leading to vines that produce meagre crops with intensely flavoured fruit. Located just 30 meters above sea level, the vineyard enjoys a warm climate, well-protected from sea breezes, making it ideal for red winegrowing. The Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 from this site offers a core of dark fruit, with firm tannins providing structure and length, resulting in a wine with great aging potential. The winemaker's philosophy is to allow the terroir to shine through, taking a back seat to let the land fully express itself in every glass. This wine is a true expression of place, and a perfect representation of the exceptional qualities of Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon.
Smells
Rich, dark berry fruit and earthy complexity with lifted notes of sandalwood, cedar, violets, florals thyme and a hint of vanilla.
Tastes
A dense, weighty wine kept in check by firm tannin and gentle acidity which drives exceptional length across the palate. The tannins are suave, fine and sophisticated giving, energy, excitement and balance to the dense core of fruit. One for the cellar but will also drink well now if decanted. Perhaps one of the finest NZ Cabernets the Fine Wine team have tasted, it could even be mistaken for a Margaret River Cabernet. Enjoy with red meats and hard cheeses. The recommended serving temperature is 16-18 degrees.
