Originally planted in 1993, the 10ha of vineyards in Onetangi are all on steep slopes ranging from 10 to 35 degrees, in a location often referred to as the Grand Cru region of the Island. Enjoying the stunning micro-climate of Waiheke, Obsidian creates generous and sophisticated reds. “The Mayor” is a Prestige Single Vineyard production named after “Mayor Island” discovered by Captain James Cook in 1769. It is a complex blend of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot & Malbec. Noted as a generational quality vintage, this hand harvested & hand sorted 2020 was made in very limited quantities and aged in fine French oak barriques. It is drinking superbly with 5 years of age… but will evolve further through 2028-2030.

Beautiful floral notes give a vibrant lift to the blackberry, cherry, blueberry, and fine cedar aromas.

The hallmark complexity & sophistication typical in all Obsidian wines, is on show here with layers of blackberry, cherry and blueberry fruits infused with liquorice, dark chocolate, and fine spicy oak.
