Description

Stonecroft was established in 1982 and was one of the first vineyards in the area, which has more recently become known as the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District®. At that time, the area was not valued for any type of agriculture because the land was stony and infertile. When Stonecroft’s founders, Dr. Alan and Glennice Limmer, first planted vines they were therefore taking a calculated risk. Dr. Limmer was a soil scientist and had been consulting for vineyard owners in Hawke’s Bay, so he recognised the potential of the area. Stonecroft’s first vintage was in 1987 and then in 1989 the first Syrah was released. This was the first Syrah produced commercially in New Zealand in recent times. Stonecroft later went on to produce the first commercially produced Zinfandel in New Zealand (in 1998). Stonecroft winery was then purchased by Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin in 2010 and converted it to organic production. Fast forward to 2024. The Fistonich Family are the official new owners of Stonecroft and look forward to continuing the legacy. A long history and definitely a winery to keep your eyes on, especially considering its new owners.. Watch this space!!!

Smells

A heady and indulgent bouquet of cassis, tobacco, liquorice, and leather.

Tastes

Flavours of ripe blackberry and dark cherry and intense aromas of blackcurrant and plum, complemented by hints of cedar. The tannins are firm yet velvety, providing structure, while the acidity is well-balanced, giving freshness. The finish is long and expressive, with lingering notes of dark chocolate and spice. The overall expression is that of a focused wine, needing a bit of time in a temperature-controlled cellar. If you cannot wait, decant a few hours prior to serving.
