From the generational quality 2020 vintage, this Double 5 Starred red blend contends for the finest bang for buck Bordeaux style red in NZ. Tironui’ s 5-acre vineyard is nestled just below “Sugarloaf” in Taradale, overlooking New Zealand’s oldest winery “Mission Estate”, with views across Napier and out to Cape Kidnappers in the distance. The majestic vineyard is planted on a steeply terraced north facing amphitheater like site, dramatic, free draining and protected from the Southerly weather. The site is a smaller reincarnation of the legendary Esk Valley Terraces vineyard where everything must be hand tended and making wine is frankly a labour of love. Planted in 3 varietals… Malbec 51%, Merlot 42% and Cabernet Sauvignon 7%... the grapes are co-picked by hand and co-fermented as you would a Côte Rôtie or one of France’s famous “Field Blends”. It is then aged in largely seasoned oak barrels for 20-months building texture & complexity while allowing the beautifully concentrated fruit to be the hero. Pouring a gorgeous deep purple in the glass with structure and concentration to burn. This is seriously superb red highly underpriced.

Beautifully structured and concentrated with dark berry and blackcurrant fruits. The oak balance is perfect, giving a nutty character and touch of spice. Warm and chocolatey with a fine tannin structure and softly creamy finish. This 2020 Tironui is impressive, an expression of a unique vineyard and hand tending from vine to glass. Great drinking now and through 2029. Perfect with BBQ and roasted meats.
