Description
This extraordinary Argentine Malbec from the Catena Zapata family is much more than a wine—it's the culmination of over a century of passion, tradition, and expertise. Drawing from old vines in their revered Nicasia and Angélica vineyards, it represents a tireless pursuit to craft a Malbec that rivals the world's greatest wines. The Nicasia Vineyard, named after Nicolás Catena Zapata's grandmother, lies at an elevation of 1,095m, with shallow loamy soils and gravel-strewn topsoil, nurturing 20-year-old vines. Meanwhile, the Angélica Vineyard, named for his mother, features light gravel, loam, and clay soils adjacent to a dry riverbed, supporting 90-year-old vines at 920m elevation. These sites are rooted in history, cultivated from pre-phylloxeric massale selections known as "The Catena Cuttings," which date back to the Angélica Vineyard's original plantings. With the meticulous care given to each vineyard lot, where harvest times are precisely adapted to soil composition, the 2004 museum release delivers an unforgettable wine that’s both a masterpiece of terroir and a tribute to a family's enduring legacy. Expect profound complexity, elegance, and a sense of magic in every bottle—a rare opportunity to taste history.
Smells
perfumed, fragrant and complex aromas of dark berries, black cherry, black pepper, cloves and fire ember notes.
Tastes
surprisingly elegant on the palate with an exceptional structure and still very youthful and has a long life ahead. The aromas are mirrored on the palate with fine tannic backbone, extending to the polished, fine finish. If opened today, decant one hour prior to serving or cellar for 10 years+. Serve with a price cut of beef. The recommended serving temperature is 16-18 degrees.
