Awarded 99 points by Luca Maroni - 2023 is the 4th consecutive vintage to rate 99/100. I’ve been wondering when he might give this amazingly consistent Italian red a perfect 100/100. I recently discovered Luca does not think any wine can be given a perfect score, 99/100 is his maximum rating, which he has given Masso Antico 4 consecutive vintages. We agree with Luca… it’s utterly delicious. Primitivo (or Zinfandel as it’s known in the USA) offers big, bold, rustic, generous wines with opulent mouthfeel and flavours. They do so at an amazing price, apropos the abundance of old bush vines in Primitivo’s Puglia home. The Italians manage to capture the essence of this wine style, with the opulence of fruit perfectly balanced by chewy tannins and rounded acid. Making it oh so drinkable, but also the ideal complement to pizza or pasta. Age worthy for 5-7 years if you can ignore its temptation that long.
Smells
Dark, heady aromas of baked blackberries, mulberries and Black Doris plums with cocoa, brown spice, plus hints of leather and cola.
Tastes
The palate has generous fresh & baked black berry & plum fruit flavours wrapped in chewy, savoury tannins and a salivating, lightly saline acid thread, bringing harmony and drinkability. Simply delicious on all levels from the opulent fruit to savoury thread, baking spices and long luscious finish. A red to enjoy and relax with… and fall into convivial discussion. No need for complications or deep thought with a glass of this in hand. Perfect drinking now through to 2029.
