Description
Smoking Loon was established with a very simple premise: good wine doesn’t need to take itself so seriously. Originally named for Don Sebastiani’s love of cigars and his father August’s passion for waterfowl (don’t ask, long story), Smoking Loon offers an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek approach to enjoying wine. Our wines are crafted for those with an appetite for adventure, those in touch with their inner loon, and those who consider pretence simply unnecessary. Each vintage provides our winemakers the perfect opportunity to have a little fun and indulge their inner loon. But the accolades for this wine suggest the winemakers are very serious, not only delivering a range of value for money Californian wines rated Best Value by Wine Spectator Magazine 15 times, Best Buy by Wine Enthusiast Magazine 29 times and won a staggering 95 Gold Medals. Impressive to say the least……
Smells
a gorgeous nose of chocolate coated coffee beans, forest floor, tobacco leaves, blackcurrants, blackberries, cedar, and spice.
Tastes
unctuous fruit initially but instantly the fruit weight on the mid-back palate takes over, giving length, drive, and direction. The plush fruit seems Californian, but the structure is serious and suddenly all those medals make sense now. This is a whole lot of wine in the bottle. Smokey and brown spice flavours morph into milk chocolate and cocoa giving way to a bitter chocolate finish. Superb drinking now through 2030 with BBQ meats or roast beef. The recommended serving temperature is 16-18 degrees.
