Description

Calvert vineyard was created out of a special piece of Bannockburn land purchased by Owen Calvert in 1989. Under Owen, Calvert was one of the earliest NZ vineyards to become organically certified in 2006. He leased the vineyard to Felton Road, Pyramid Valley & Craggy Range for almost a decade, this trio of outstanding NZ wine producers made many of the regions and New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noirs during their tenure at Calvert Vineyard. In 2014 Owen leased the entire vineyard to Cloudy Bay and in 2018 took Calvert back under family management and appointed journeyed winemaker Sarah Burton. Post graduating at Lincoln University in 2000, Sarah worked vintages in Oregon USA, Bordeaux France, Douro Valley Portugal, Tuscany Italy, Hunter Valley Australia, and in both Hawkes Bay and Marlborough NZ before coming home to work in Central Otago at Calvert as part of the Cloudy Bay team. Sarah’s diverse international winemaking experience over 18 years, including her time with Cloudy Bay at Calvert, were important to her appointment as winemaker when Owen decided it was time to take back Calvert and put his stamp on it. Although all equally outstanding, each of the three Pinots made by Felton Road, Pyramid Valley & Craggy Range during their 10-year tenure at Calvert vineyard were all quite different. Highlighting the level of influence winemakers have on a wine. This impressive treble 95/100 rated Calvert 2020... is the third vintage since Sarah began her tenure at this now legendary vineyard. Calvert is special terroir, this 2020 captures its character and beauty showcased through Sarah’s exceptional and considered winemaking.

Smells

An alluring bouquet of dark and red berry fruit, cinnamon and exotic spice, crushed thyme, chocolate, vanilla and spice.

Tastes

Silky, smooth, laden with charm and deliciousness. There is a core of dark, densely compacted fruit running the length of the palate, supported by chalky, fine grain tannins and acidity that is perfectly interwoven, such that’s hard to dissect this wine as it a complete package, from go to whoa. No rush to drink, if you can resist, will cellar for 5-8 years+ and perfect with duck or pork dishes.
