Description

Grown in the cool, expressive terroir of Martinborough, this 2023 Pinot Noir from Kusuda is the product of meticulous hand-harvested fruit from a blend of clones (Dijon, Able, Mariafeld, UCD, etc.), cold soaking, gentle open-vat fermentation and careful ageing (22% new French oak barriques for 15 months). The 2023 vintage saw some weather challenges, including more rain than usual and the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle, but Kusuda’s rigorous sorting and selection shine through in this wine.

Smells

A refined nose of wild cherry, blood plum, and red raspberry, with undercurrents of forest floor, sweet earth and dried herbs. Lifted floral notes of rosehip and violet peek through, alongside subtle spice and oak notes.

Tastes

On the palate it is elegant yet there's depth: flavours of ripe red cherries and dark berries meld with hints of sweet spice and oak. The tannins are fine-grained, silky but with enough grip to promise cellaring. Acid balance is vivid, giving freshness and tension through to a long, mineral-tinged finish with savory touches and soft earth. A Pinot that marries finesse with clear expression.
