2024 McArthur Ridge Southern Tor Pinot Noir was released to the trade 3-months ago – we reserved our launch for our Annual Top 25 Pinot Noir Showcase month in June; confident it would show shine in our 100+ Pinot Noir review lineup. I was on the panel for the review and was absolutely wowed by the concentration, purity, energy and balance of the 2024 (we all were). We’re said it is destined for Global Show Success like its 2020/2021/2022/2023 predecessors. Well, the results of Decanter World Wine Awards have just been released (World’s Equal Toughest Wine Show alongside the IWC) and 2024 McArthur Ridge Southern Tor has been awarded Platinum + 97/100… this is NZ’s most consistently and highly awarded Pinot Noir internationally. A shame it was not submitted for the IWC in time, it would have shone there too! Previously… Southern Tor has enjoyed unprecedented NZ Pinot Noir Champion Trophy Success. 2020/2021/2022/2023 vintages won a combined 14 Champion Trophies + 13 Gold Medals + Decanter Best in Show + 7 x 96-97/100 Ratings + 4 x 5 Stars! Compelling results indeed! This new 2024 is again impressive, gorgeous in fact, every bit as good as the previous 4 we feel, perhaps a touch more muscular. The Southern Tor style is consistently rich, mouth filling, textural, with very smooth tannins and delicious, sweet/savoury contrast. The final clue to Southern Tor’s Global success is its making by Central Otago “World Champion” Pinot Noir winemaker “Matt Connell”. World Class Kiwi Pinot for the price of a Village Red Burgundy… but delivering Premier Cru quality (some would argue Grand Cru). Utterly delicious in its youth... it will age easily for 10-years and is a benchmark Pinot cellar bargain!
Smells
Haunting aromas of dark berry and fresh dark cherry with subtle raspberry. Floral and baking spice notes emerge from under the heady fruit.
Tastes
Instantly luscious and textural... a wave of black berry, plum and cherry, layered with subtle sweet baking spices, totally wow your taste buds. A subtle thread of toasty oak with hints of black forest Gateau and savoury game build charm and momentum as it culminates in a powerful, but elegantly dry finish.
