Description

Staggering End of Label CLEARANCE of Esk Valley’s (Prestige Release) The Great Dirt Series River Gravel’s Syrah, a celebration of the unique vineyards and revered soils in which the vines grow. This single vineyard wine is produced from a small parcel of Syrah vines on the legendary Cornerstone Vineyard located on the corner of Gimblett Road and Highway 50, at the heart of the famed Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. The famous Limmer clone vines were planted in 1996 in very stony Class 1a Omahu Stony Gravels. Yields are kept low and the vines intensively farmed in the pursuit of quality. There is incredible depth of fruit and complexity in this 94-95-96-96/100 rated Syrah… emanating from the soils and maturation for 14-months in 30% new French oak puncheons. 2021 was a beautifully balanced vintage delivering intensity and elegance… it will drink deliciously through 2035 if well cared for.

Smells

A heady perfume of black pepper, plums, fresh dark cherries, sandalwood, dark chocolate and spices.

Tastes

Wonderfully deep, dark fruit resonates throughout the concentrated palate, with layers of fine French oak complexity creating body and richness. Silky smooth tannins give structure and transition the juicy, vibrant fruit. The salivating, elegant edge is alluring and adds to the irresistibility of the wine. Drinking well from 2025 through 2035… an ideal partner to roasted red meats.

Full of plums and cherries. A great Autumn wine to enjoy now or cellar.

A very generously fruited, concentrated syrah with lovely depth. No hint of cool climate, but in no way overblown or crass. Best years ahead, but very drinkable now.

Lovely drop. Great value for money. Don't really want to upsell too much though as I want to buy more myself!

28th April 2025 | Simon Gummer

Outstanding! As a long time fan of Gordon Russsell syrah's don't come any better!

Very nice, my lips haven’t reacted like that since my first kiss with my wife ?

The 2021 Esk Valley Great Dirt Collection wine is a truly exceptional wine and one to be reserved for special occasions and savored in the years ahead.

28th April 2025 | Ian Shackelford

An excellent wine for the money. I am trying not to drink the remainder of my order so I can savour it in a few year's time. So good

28th April 2025 | Richard Mclean

How can this wine be discontinued? Deep and complex berry/cherry characters leading to an all-round rich Syrah. Drinking well now but years to enjoy! Well done Gordon (former winemaker at Esk Valley)

It's Jeff... I don't do this normally. I do the offers for everyone. But I have already consumed 6-bottles of this Elite Esk Valley Syrah... it is Hawke's Bay meets Rhone Hermitage in style, no pepper, just beautiful savoury and spice with dark fruits and refined oak... Bloody delicious and up to 10-years of great drinking. Price is ridiculous. 5/5 easily for me. JEFF
