Obsidian are one of Waiheke’s prestige producers with vines planted in Onetangi, the area that many consider as the Island's Grand Cru. 2022 was a balmy vintage with ideal growing conditions, especially for ripening Syrah to perfection. The outcome is this stunning wine with concentration, power, and finesse, rather than the blockbusters that often come to mind when thinking of Waiheke reds. We’ve summed up its quality with a 95/100 rating. It’s superbly approachable as a young Syrah… but will repay patience through 2027-2030.
Smells
Vibrant aromas of dark plum, blackberry, and baking spices atop a hint of black pepper, finishing with an earthy, herbal complexing thread.
Tastes
A deliciously structured and juicy Syrah. Tons of red and dark berry & plum fruits with a plush mid-palate enveloping the taste buds in a creamy tirade of black fruits, mocha and fresh raspberries dipped in Belgian chocolate. Fine toasty oak complexity threads a juicy Black Forest Gateaux-tinged finish carried in smooth tannin and balanced acidity. Seriously good and delicious Syrah that will evolve for the next 5-7 years… Enjoy! Perfect with all juicy red roasted meats.
