We know about rotundone - the black pepper taste in Syrah - but here's a wine that argues the case for fruit essence captured in the beauty of wine.” Many Critics Ratings (many global) 95-95-95-96-97-97/100… everyone is on the same page regarding the beauty, structure, deep layers of flavour, fine oak, texture/tannin and complexity of this magnificent Old-Vine Syrah from the exceptional 2021 vintage… age worthy through 2040 in quality storage. So good… it could have come off the Hill of Hermitage! This Reserve Syrah is from the original vine cuttings Alan Limmer famously planted in the Gimblett Gravels in 1984. NZ’s oldest Syrah vines… 37-years old at the time of this fabulous 2021 harvest. Our panel described it as a “beast of a Syrah”, referring to its imposing concentration and mouthcoating fine tannins… but that is beautifully contrasted with commensurate intrigue & finesse. It has impressive Rhone-like complexity, its power and structure should see it cellar worthy for 15-20+ years.
Smells
Deep, leathery, cassis and plum, with exotic spice and dried herbs… full of intrigue, it’s captivating!
Tastes
Super opulent, spicy and concentrated with every dark fruit known to man but luscious ripe plum rules, coupled with some leathery/earthy nuances. This powerful Syrah ideally needs to be left through 2030+ to integrate its big, ripe but fine tannins; want a sneaky peak first… get a special cut of red meat out, slosh this beauty into a decanter, sit back and enjoy the awakening of your olfactory senses! Hide some in the cellar, pull it out in 15-20 years and serve with a juicy prime cut of beef, it will be etched in your wine memory.
