Description
Grand Reserve aptly describes the quality of production. And last year’s 2022 (not for the first time) won the coveted “Triple Crown” (Champion Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay – Champion NZ Chardonnay – Champion NZ White Wine) at the IWC in London, the World’s Equal Toughest Wine Show. Demand is global and over the last 8-years our customer allocation is limited to around 20 x 6-packs per release, reserved for recidivist Grand Reserve buyers over our 28-years of Fine Wine Delivery trading. For the first time in a long time, we have been allocated enough stocks (112 x 6-packs) enabling us to spread the love (still won’t satisfy all demand) with this stunning 2023 Grand Reserve that drew a unanimous 96/100 from our tasting panel. It is yet to hit the ‘Show Circuit’ … but almost certain to make its presence felt when it does. Only the finest parcels of fruit are selected from the very best Church Road vineyards across Hawke’s Bay, Grand Reserve is a Chardonnay of the utmost distinction — world-class with structure, flavour and depth that feel unmistakably like its Hawke’s Bay heritage. Everything about 2023 Church Road Grand Reserve is dialled up to MAX! A beautiful vanilla-scented bouquet bursting with stone fruits, grapefruit, gunflint, toasty oak and pineapple, the palate is a luxurious parade of creamy and nutty flavours building towards a mouth-watering finish. Not a hair out of place in this 2023 vintage, the elegant, savoury, biscuity notes elevate it to elite level.
Smells
Tantalising vanilla bean and freshly baked bread crust, with peach, nectarine, pineapple and an engaging slatey, mineral lift, laced with toasty French oak.
Tastes
Gorgeously creamy and layered with creme brulée, caramel and peach cobbler, toasty oak and smoky/flinty complexities. There is a lovely saline, mineral note to keep all the decadence in focus, with a fresh acidity carrying a long, nuanced finish. A sensational Church Road Grand Reserve Chardonnay, as good or better than those that have gone before - serve this iconic wine with good food and good company… now and through 2029-2033.
