Californian Chardonnay is loved by many, and this Clay Creek has everything you’d want in terms of generosity of stone fruits, richness, creaminess, plus a classic buttery edge. The grapes were carefully selected from diverse vineyards, a mix of both cool and warmer climates to create complexity and layers of flavour. The 2023 vintage has resulted in a high-quality wine, impressive to taste and an impressively affordable Californian Chardonnay that will continue to grow Kiwi’s interest in California. It will drink through 2028+… but don’t wait, its utterly delicious now. The tastiest, more balanced, complete Californian Chardonnay under $30/bottle to have come across our tasting table.
Smells
Seductive aromas of ripe Golden Queen peach, nectarine, roasted hazelnut, cashew, toast, butter and vanilla pod.
Tastes
Big, rich, creamy, buttery & toasty, everything you want in a Californian Chardonnay, it finishes with an engaging, moreish freshness due to its crystalline acid thread. Flavours are reminiscent of golden peach, nectarine, creaming butter & vanilla, with subtle freshening lemon juice. If you were cooking a like flavoured dessert, you’d be compelled to lick the spoon, yum. Add in a late burst of fresh apricots and toasty French & American oak, the French oak dominating. Enjoy by itself, when dining match with chicken, turkey or pork. The recommended serving temperature is 10-13 degrees.
