Description
This beautifully managed (further inland) Rays Road Hawke's Bay vineyard was purchased off Trinity Hill in April 2017 and regrafted largely with a selection of Burgundy Chardonnay clones… this is the 7th release off the block. The dry-farmed limestone hillside allows the Kumeu River team to show a different expression of Chardonnay. Fermented in seasoned French oak, showing a fruitier, full-bodied and weighty expression of Chardonnay compared with their home vineyards in Kumeu, a delicious contrast. Ripe stone fruit in a lively, zesty mix of grapefruit, lemon, and mandarin. The seasoned oak builds texture and lets the fruit sing with lingering minerality.
Smells
Aromas of grapefruit, peaches and cream, buttery lees, and fresh sourdough.
Tastes
A fresh array of white nectarine, rock melon, grapefruit and subtle mandarin are infused with nutty oak and hints of lemon meringue pie. The seasoned French oak provides texture taking nothing away for the pure fruit. Subtle oak, lees stirring and wild fermentation has all added beguile, cleansed and lengthened by a fine line of acidity. Drink now, or age until 2030, with oysters’ au natural.
