Description
All Pegasus Bay Reserve wines carry an operatic name—a tribute to Mrs. Donaldson, the matriarch of this esteemed estate, whose passion for opera sees her frequently performing with the Christchurch choir. The name ‘Virtuoso’ couldn’t be more fitting for their Reserve Chardonnay, nor for Chris Donaldson, as it perfectly embodies someone with exceptional expertise and dedication to their craft. This Chardonnay is crafted with meticulous care and precision: fermented with natural yeast in French puncheons (500L barrels), 30% of which are new, and allowed extended lees ageing to build richness and texture. The result is a wine of remarkable layers, complexity, balance, and harmony. While it offers immediate pleasure, there’s no rush to open it—this wine will age gracefully for 10+ years in a well-managed cellar, continuing to evolve into something truly extraordinary.
Smells
On the nose, there are aromas of citrus and stone fruit, together with a hint of struck match adding a refreshing and flinty minerality. Layered beneath there are also savoury notes of almond, toast, and brioche.
Tastes
The colour is deep lemon, and the palate has satisfying concentration yet balanced with a lively seam of acidity that helps prolong the finish. Despite its body, the wine remains tight and focused, displaying elegance and refinement typical of this vintage. Serve with roasted white meats or savoury vegetarian dishes. The recommended serving temperature is 10-13 degrees.
