Description
The ‘Greg’ range is a heartfelt tribute to Whitehaven’s founder, Greg White (1952–2007), and showcases the very best of Marlborough’s regional and varietal character. To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Whitehaven has released the inaugural ‘Greg’ Single Vineyard Chardonnay—and what a debut it is. Sourced exclusively from the historic Balvonie Vineyard (formerly Rothay), planted back in 1995 with Mendoza clone Chardonnay, this stony, free-draining site along the Wairau River yields tiny golden berries of exceptional concentration and flavour. With just 120 cases produced, this is a wine of true rarity, crafted with intensity, finesse, and an eye to the future. An extraordinary first release, and without doubt one for the cellar.
Smell: Ripe peach and citrus, with complexing savoury and smoky undertones.
Taste: Rich, dry and elegant, with lovely impact and texture. The wine possesses a strong spine of fleshy ripe stone fruit and layers of toasty hazelnuts, creamy yeast lees characters and savoury, smoky, flint-like elements. The wine has excellent length and flavour persistence. Drinking well now through 2030+, it has the structure and closure to allow continued development with careful cellaring. It will match perfectly with Mediterranean food, pork, chicken and creamy mushroom pasta. The recommended serving temperature is 10-13 degrees.
