Description
Te Whare Ra has long been recognised as one of Marlborough’s finest producers of aromatic wines, and the 2023 Single Vineyard 5182 Pinot Gris is yet another shining example of their mastery. This wine is the result of decades of thoughtful viticulture and precision winemaking. When the team took over the estate, they replanted part of the old block with the Berry-Smith clone (also known as the Larkham clone), chosen specifically for its low yields, small bunches, and intensely flavoured berries—ideal traits for premium Pinot Gris. Every aspect of this wine speaks to quality: from the meticulous hand-picking and sorting to the fermentation in a mix of stainless steel and seasoned French oak, followed by regular lees stirring to build texture and complexity. The result is a richly layered, elegant Pinot Gris with beautiful purity of fruit, a silken mouthfeel, and subtle spice—an expressive, food-friendly white that proves Marlborough Pinot Gris can be world class.
Smells
Wonderfully aromatic, pear, apple, jasmine, ginger and spice.
Tastes
So generous on the palate, the pear and apple come to the fore. The old oak provides a wonderful texture, while vibrant acidity gives the wine great balance, length and energy. This release is a dry style which has concentration, balance and great texture with layers of flavour. Drink now, but would continue to evolve until 2028, serve with a bounty of Thai dishes. The recommended serving temperature is 7-9 degrees.
