Description
Champion Trophy Royal Hobart + 2 Gold Medals + 93-95-95-95/100… 2023 is the 50th consecutive vintage of Jim Barry Watervale DRY Riesling. I’ve aged previous vintages 15-20-years, they evolved into a revelationary honeyed, textural dry white of a quality that comfortably transcends its modest asking price. Wine has been flowing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the regional culture. A small area, accounting for less than 1.5% of Australia’s total wine production, it is one of Australia’s most prestigious premium wine regions, most famous for its Riesling and Shiraz. The tiny village of Watervale (population of 246), nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley, is most renowned for the quality of its Riesling. Jim Barry Watervale Riesling is picked from a special part of the Old-Vine Florita vineyard in Watervale. This legendary Riesling vineyard usually achieves full ripeness with high natural acid levels… enabling its impressive age worthiness.
Smells
An eruption of jasmine and honeysuckle florals intermingle with orange blossom, apple, rock melon and lime.
Tastes
The palate is vibrant with a generous medley of fresh apple, rock melon, white peach and preserved lemon unfolding. Hints of lime spice and pink grapefruit add lift and complexity to the zesty DRY finish that lingers for quite some time. A wine of presence and energy, springing you into life and where the crystalline acidity adds invigorating freshness. No hurry to drink as will cellar 10 years+. Or if drinking young serve with fresh oysters, a match made in heaven… also with pan fried snapper and spicy Asian cuisine. The recommended serving temperature is 6-8 degrees.
