Description
Very few people get to enjoy the top reds of Matakana, since so little is made. Mark Ching's vineyard is only 1.7ha, The Gabion wines from it are made by Tracey Haslam of Ti Point in a very classical and 'Right Bank Bordeaux' style. 2019 was a top year in the North and an easy year for winemakers to get it right, but as always you have to do the Mahi... strict selection and hands-on viticulture have produced a stunning wine of subtle power and great complexity.
Smells
Classical Bordeaux-like nose of plum, autumn leaves, forest floor and cedar, with hints of tobacco, black olive, and cassis. Beautifully done.
Tastes
Mellow, complex, and nicely maturing, with a dark core of spicy fruit and earthy cedar supported by very fine, resolved tannins. Entering its best drinking years now, it should be at its best through 2029. With airtime in the glass this wine opens up magically, the complexity emerges, and the tannins and fruit become one… harmonious
