Description

Verismo is an Italian term meaning “realism” or “truth.” It also refers to a late 19th-century operatic movement defined by its dramatic, emotionally raw narratives. This spirit of authenticity resonates deeply with the wine it names. The 2019 season followed a typical Central Otago temperature pattern, but stood out for its unusually high rainfall and the absence of the region’s characteristic north-west spring winds. The increased spring moisture led to vigorous canopy growth, demanding close monitoring and tight spray intervals to prevent disease pressure. Fortunately, flowering and fruit set conditions were ideal at Misha’s Vineyard, and a mild, settled autumn allowed for optimal ripening. However, the broader region experienced a more turbulent season, with severe frosts hitting both early and late. In this context, the vineyard’s steep slopes and natural frost drainage proved invaluable. Verismo is a testament to their dedication, representing a meticulous small-barrel selection of the finest ferments. With only a few hundred cases produced, it’s as rare as it is extraordinary—a bold expression of both the vintage and the artistry behind it.

Smells

Beautiful, quiet Burgundian nose of crushed herbs, roses, smoke, cherries, violets, and brown spices.

Tastes

Elegantly proportioned in the mouth with alluring savoury, meaty undertones supporting the sweet, supple cherry fruit. Perhaps it's the name but there seems to be a bit of Italian about this wine, giving a nod to Nebbiolo and Sangiovese along the way. Ultimately though it's all Pinot - a beautiful expression of a cool Central Otago vintage with purity and precision. Enjoy with venison or wild pork between now and 2030+. The recommended serving temperature is 13-15 degrees.
