Renowned Kiwi Wine Critic Michael Cooper recognises wines like this with a 'Super Classic' status having reached excellence in quality for five or more years. Lawson's is one of only three Gewurztraminer to have ever achieved this!


And that's what forty years of experience growing in Marlborough certainly shows, as well as the benefit of vine age, with fruit coming from 15 to 40-year-old vines. Add to that the 2019 vintage was a dream weatherwise, with consistently warm and even temperatures throughout spring and summer. But this wine takes it one step further from being all about the fruit, with the added complexity of lees ageing and a portion of barrel fermentation to give that elegant spice and texture that balances the fruit superbly!

Tropical lychee, classic turkish delight, unctuous ripe sultana, and gorgeous floral notes, give way to a silky and exotic finish. Rich and just off-dry so it has just the perfect amount of sweetness without being cloying.

Description

Judged best Gewurztraminer in NZ, this Lawsons Dry Hills is certainly a step up from past years (although it has always been solid). This year they've thrown 15% old barrels at the wine to give it a spice and texture that is quite thrilling, in the process balancing out the exuberant aromatics.

Smells

A hint of spicy oak with lychee, Turkish delight, sultanas, and a gorgeous potpourri of florals.

Tastes

Rich and just off-dry, with all sorts of exotic spice and a rich silky finish, this is excellent and deserving of its trophy status. A variety that is hard to say but the wine is ultimately satisfying, one sip and you will be hooked. Perfect with a cheese plater or grab a bottle and head to your local Asian BYO, a heavenly comb with Tom Yum Gai.
