Stored away as a true labour of love in the winery cellars for many years, to allow its complex and seductive palate to be at its best on release for Fine Dining Restaurants around the globe. However, the pandemic has crushed the hospitality markets, causing this famous NZ winery to CLEAR their Prestige Barrel Fermented Sauvignon from the excellent 2015 vintage at just $16.99, hidden to your door. It will arrive in its normal label and carton, when all will be revealed.

It showed beautifully in the glass in our tasting review. As opposed to the traditional Marlborough fruit driven Sauvignon, the body is very textural and layered with delicate nutty Fuder Barrel and lees aging complexities. There is no doubt this is expensively made Sauvignon Blanc - a more European style, that shines with food like great Chardonnay.

The fruit is handpicked ensuring each parcel is in pristine condition. After indigenous fermentation the juice rests on yeast lees for 11 months in new 1,000L German Oak, Fuder Barrels. These large format barrels ensure less direct contact between juice and the oak surface, allowing white wines to develop greater complexity and refinement and prevent the oak from dominating. The staves of Fuder barrels are thicker which means the temperature of ferment tends to be warmer and the fruit characters gain greater depth and complexity.

An exotic array of fruits including melon, papaya and pineapple, laced with subtle nutty and smoky complexities. A generous and rich palate with hints of grilled pineapple and citrus zest threading the tropical and passionfruit, and creamy butterscotch revealed in the seductive, lengthy finish. A seriously textural wine that gets better and better with time in the glass. It is drinking beautifully now and will do so up until 2025 and beyond, if carefully cellared. Enjoy with grilled snapper and a spicy sweetcorn salsa, the food matches are many and varied with this complex, seductive Sauvignon.

Delight in the staggering $23 a bottle savings, and treat yourself to a skillfully made wine, aged to perfection and drinking beautifully right now at just $16.99!

Description

In the last decade we’ve seen a growing demand for premium barrel aged expressions of Marlborough Sauvignon and this iconic producer has been at the forefront. The grapes were hand-harvested from a single vineyard in the Wairau Valley, fermentation started with wild yeast before being aged in large oak barrels for 11 months. Rich and intense, exceptionally long, it is a very complex and refined Sauvignon that excels with extended bottle age and is in a stunning drinking window now after 7-years of cellar maturation. Like a great Chardonnay it has abundant body, mouthfeel and complexity which should excite you to create an equally fascinating and delicious food match.
