2018 d'Arenberg The Money Spider Roussanne

It reminds me of a Hunter Valley Semillon from days gone by, rich, oily and superb drinking.

D’Arenberg are legendary, the winery and all its vineyards are located in the McLaren Vale, South Australia and are world famous for their Shiraz, especially The Dead Arm Shiraz, iconic. Roussanne (Rhone white variety) was planted in the late 90’s where the first crop was covered in tiny ‘Money Spiders’. Popular belief is that kindness to these creatures will bring good luck. They were left to their own devices and what do you know, in the next season these little creatures had relocated, making the first release of this wine in 2001. The Money Spider Roussanne 2018, continues the high-quality standard set by this infamous McLaren Vale producer.

It reminds me of an olden day style of Hunter Valley Semillon, a rich, oily bouquet of freshly cut straw, dripping melted butter, lemon and lime skin with toasty and vanilla hints.

A rich concentrated palate with great length, balance and energy. Those oily, viscous textures give wonderful mouthfeel balanced by the straw, beeswax, ripe stone fruit and rock melon flavours. Delicious drinking now with cheese or canapes.
