2020 Putangi will be one of the finest dry Pinot Gris experiences you have had the pleasure of… if not your finest. Beautifully concentrated it carries all the purity and minerality of a top shelf Central Otago Pinot Gris and is impressive drinking at $23.99!

Greg Hay’s involvement in the NZ Wine Industry is compelling.
He helped set up Chard Farm with his brother, then co-founded Peregrine Wines and ran that for 17 years. But it seems he has saved the best till last ... with his latest brand - Putangi by Wet Jacket Wines. The inspiration behind Putangi wines comes from Greg’s two loves. World-class wines showcasing his beloved Central Otago, and spending time in the awe-inspiring beauty of Fiordland, which is where he learnt the inspirational story of Richard Henry “The Grandfather of Conservation” in NZ.

He was a local conservationist in the late 1800’s who gave safe passage to over 800 birds at risk from the introduction of Stoats and Weasels, trapping them and rowing them across the waters to Resolution Island, in his dinghy named Putangi. The beautiful silhouette on the bottle rowing out in solitude is a dedication to a great man who worked tirelessly to save our rarest birds.

Discovering Putangi has been such find for us… this 2020 Pinot Gris is seductively complex, dry and fulsomely delicious. The type of super star quality we all love to discover and delight in tabling for special friends and family. It was created by Peter Bartle who has enjoyed an exemplary 26 years winemaking in Central Otago. Pete was one of the finalists for this year’s Gourmet Traveler Magazine NZ Winemaker of the Year. He boasts a lengthy list of accolades throughout his very successful career producing many of Otago’s finest wines… including the 2005 vintage Peregrine Pinot that won 5 Champion Trophies including “World Champion Red Wine” at the International Wine & Spirit Competition” in London.

The Wine…

Putangi Pinot Gris has enticing aromas of apple blossom, guava, pear, nectarine, marzipan, crème brulée and honeysuckle. A smooth, rich palate with ripe tropical fruits, pineapple, mandarin, baked pears, ginger spice and ripe lime on the finish. Delicate phenolics and minerality give it wonderful mouth feel and balance. Made for roast chicken with all the trimmings... also made to be enjoyed by itself… now through 2025.

Extremely limited availability…
Putangi is a small quality driven production so is rarely found in any NZ wine retail… Fine Wine Delivery are privileged to have a small allocation and are offering it to our premium Pinot Gris customers at $23.99 where its quality v value is exemplary.

Enjoy, Jeff

Description

Crafted by Greg Hay, Putangi is the name dedicated to the dingy that Richard Henry used to try and save as many of our rarest birds, Kakapo and Kiwi from extinction from rodents. He rowed around the Dusky Sounds in his dingy named Putangi, collecting as many birds as possible, transferring them to what he hoped would be the safety of Resolution Island. Putangi is the Maori name for Paradise Duck. Certainly, a man of inspiration and dedication.
